Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park is located in the northeastern region of Tanzania and offers some of the most thrilling safari experiences. Though often overshadowed by the more famous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha National Park offers a unique and diverse array of landscapes and wildlife. It is a haven for nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and anyone looking to experience the pristine beauty of Tanzania’s wilderness.

Why Visit Arusha National Park

Mount Meru

Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and a dominant feature of Arusha National Park. It offers a spectacular backdrop to the park and is a popular trekking destination. The ascent to Mount Meru’s summit provides climbers with breathtaking views, diverse vegetation zones, and the opportunity to spot wildlife along the trails.

Ngurdoto Crater

Often referred to as the “Little Ngorongoro,” the Ngurdoto Crater is a volcanic crater located in the southeastern part of the park. The crater is about 3 kilometers in diameter and is surrounded by dense montane forest. Within the crater lies a swamp and grassland that attract a variety of animals, including buffaloes, warthogs, and monkeys. The crater’s rim offers panoramic views, making it a perfect spot for photography.

Momella Lakes

The Momella Lakes, a series of seven shallow alkaline lakes, are found in the northeastern part of Arusha National Park. These lakes vary in color due to the different mineral contents, creating a beautiful mosaic of hues. They are a magnet for birdlife, hosting species such as flamingos, pelicans, herons, and many migratory birds. The serene environment of the lakes provides a peaceful retreat for visitors.

Tululusia Hill

Tululusia Hill, located in the southeastern part of the park, offers excellent hiking opportunities. The trail to the top of the hill is moderately challenging but rewards hikers with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and Mount Meru. The hill is also an excellent spot for birdwatching, with numerous species inhabiting the area.

What to do in Arusha National Park

Game Drives

Game drives are the most popular way to explore Arusha National Park. The park’s diverse habitats, from savannah to rainforest, provide a rich tapestry for wildlife viewing. Visitors can see giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and various antelope species. Predators like leopards and hyenas are also present but less commonly seen. The park’s compact size means that game drives are usually shorter but packed with sightings.

Walking Safaris

Arusha National Park is one of the few parks in Tanzania where walking safaris are permitted. Accompanied by an armed ranger, visitors can explore the park on foot, getting up close to the flora and fauna. Walking safaris offer a unique perspective and the chance to learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem, such as insects, plants, and tracks left by animals.

Canoeing on Momella Lakes

Canoeing on the Momella Lakes is a serene and unique way to experience the park. Paddling across the calm waters, visitors can observe waterbirds, hippos, and sometimes giraffes and buffaloes coming to drink. Canoeing offers a tranquil and immersive experience, providing a different angle to view the wildlife.

Mount Meru Climbing

For the more adventurous, climbing Mount Meru is a thrilling activity. The trek typically takes 3-4 days, passing through diverse vegetation zones, from montane forest to alpine desert. The climb is challenging but offers spectacular scenery and a chance to see wildlife such as buffaloes and giraffes in the lower slopes. The summit provides breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes.

Birdwatching

Arusha National Park is a paradise for bird watchers. With over 400 species recorded, including both resident and migratory birds, the park offers excellent birding opportunities. Some notable species include the Narina trogon, bar-tailed trogon, and various species of sunbirds and turacos. The diverse habitats, from forest to lakes, support a rich avian diversity.

Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park can be visited year-round, but the best time depends on the activities and wildlife experiences sought by visitors.

Dry Season (June to October)

The dry season is the best time for game viewing as animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. The weather is generally clear and dry, providing excellent conditions for climbing Mount Meru and enjoying walking safaris. Bird watching is also good during this period, although migratory birds are less abundant.

Wet Season (November to May)

The wet season, particularly from November to March, is the best time for bird watching as migratory birds arrive, and resident birds are in breeding plumage. The landscape is lush and green, offering beautiful scenery for photography. However, wildlife viewing can be more challenging as animals disperse, and some trails may be muddy and difficult to navigate. The period from late March to early June experiences heavier rains and is less ideal for trekking and walking safaris.
